Steg K2.04 car amplifier is designed for high-power in-car audio systems and low-impedance loads. It is stable with a 1 Ω load per channel in stereo mode or a 2 Ω load in bridged mode. Dual crossover adjustment helps coordinate the frequency bands, while STEG Link allows a personal computer to be connected. Serial Power mode provides a separate route for two linked units driving one 4 Ω load.

Description

STEG K2.04 is a two-channel Class AB car-audio power amplifier. It is designed for high-power in-car audio systems capable of using low-impedance loads. A single unit can operate in either stereo or bridged mode.

The amplifier is stable with a 1 Ω load per channel in stereo mode. In bridged mode, it supports a 2 Ω load. This makes it suitable for systems that require substantial power from either one or two channels.

Operating modes and power selection

Stereo mode is intended to drive two separate loads. With a 1 Ω load, the specified output is 2 × 1400 W RMS. This rating applies with an 11-14.4 V power supply.

Bridged mode combines both channels to drive a single load. With a 2 Ω load, the specified output is 1 × 2800 W RMS. Independent measurements produced approximately 2621-2738 W. These measurements were taken at 13.1 V with distortion of up to 1%.

Power figures obtained under different conditions should not be compared directly. Supply voltage, load impedance and the permitted distortion level all affect the result. When choosing an operating mode, the nominal impedance of the connected speakers should be considered first.

Linking two amplifiers

Serial Power mode allows two K2.04 amplifiers to be linked. A linked pair can deliver a specified 1 × 4800 W RMS into a 4 Ω load. This rating applies with an 11-14.4 V power supply.

The 4800 W figure is not the output of a single amplifier. It requires two linked units and a properly planned overall system. This mode is intended for one exceptionally high-power load rather than two independent stereo channels.

Frequency-band adjustment

Dual-adjustment crossover technology is provided for coordinating the system’s frequency bands. Choose the initial setting according to the operating frequency range of the connected speakers. Then listen from the driver’s seat and adjust the transition between bands.

The SMMS modular multiband system allows the amplifier to be incorporated into a more complex STEG audio-system configuration. It is useful when separate amplifier channels are assigned to different frequency bands. The complete speaker system determines the appropriate crossover points and operating limits.

Computer connection and settings protection

The STEG Link connection is intended for connecting a personal computer. It provides access to a compatible STEG system configuration environment. The amplifier can also store user and installation data.

Password protection helps prevent unwanted changes to stored user and installation data. A digital serial number identifies the individual unit.

Power supply, protection and cooling

A stabilised power supply allows the amplifier to operate when battery voltage is at 11 V. The specified power ratings are associated with an 11-14.4 V supply. This capability does not mean that the demands placed on the vehicle’s electrical system can be ignored.

A high-power system requires power cables and fuses with appropriate ratings. They must be selected according to the actual current demand and installation layout. The amplifier’s protection functions are managed by a microprocessor.

Heat is removed by a dual forced-air IntelliSpeed cooling system. The airflow areas must not be covered during installation. Leaving adequate space around the enclosure helps the cooling system perform its intended function.

Installation location in the vehicle

The 640 mm-long enclosure requires a substantial installation area. The amplifier should not be tightly enclosed between trim panels without air circulation. Before securing it, allow enough room to connect and service the cables.

The low 56 mm enclosure makes installation easier where vertical clearance is limited. Nevertheless, its 232 mm width and considerable length restrict the available mounting positions. The unit is made in Italy.

System configuration

A bridged connection can be used to drive one passive subwoofer with a suitable impedance. A load below the supported impedance must not be connected.

FAQ

When should I use stereo mode, and when should I use bridged mode?

Choose stereo mode for two separate loads. Bridged mode is intended for one high-power load. In either case, the impedance limits shown in the specification table must be observed.

Can one amplifier produce 4800 W?

No. This power level requires two linked K2.04 amplifiers. They are connected using Serial Power mode and drive a single 4 Ω load.

Can the amplifier be used with a subwoofer?

Yes. In bridged mode, it can drive one passive subwoofer with a suitable impedance. The subwoofer’s power handling and impedance must be appropriate for the selected connection.

What is the STEG Link connection for?

It is intended for connecting a personal computer. The connection is useful when configuring a STEG system and managing settings associated with the unit.

How should I begin adjusting the crossover?

Start with the operating frequency range of the connected speakers. Then listen to the system and adjust the transition between frequency bands. The sound around the crossover region should not become noticeably weaker or excessively prominent.

How much installation space is required?

The long enclosure needs an uninterrupted mounting area as well as additional clearance for its connections. An unobstructed airflow area must also be left for the cooling system.

Does the stabilised power supply make voltage drop irrelevant?

No. The amplifier can operate at a battery voltage of 11 V, but high output still places a substantial load on the vehicle’s electrical system. The power wiring must be selected according to the actual demand.

Is this model intended for a home audio system?

No. It is a car-audio power amplifier designed for a vehicle’s electrical and audio systems. It should not be regarded as a replacement for a home stereo amplifier.
