Yamaha RX-V4A AV Receiver

Yamaha RX-V4A AV receiver is designed for a 5.2-channel home cinema system and music listening. Its rated output power is 80 W, measured from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with two channels driven into a 6-ohm load at 0.06% total harmonic distortion. The receiver supports Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Four HDMI inputs accommodate video and audio sources. MusicCast, dual-band Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth provide several options for wireless playback. Two PRE OUT connections are provided for subwoofers.

Surround sound processing

CINEMA DSP includes 17 DSP programmes, while the dialogue level can be adjusted separately. Virtual Presence Speaker creates the impression of virtual front presence effects, Virtual Cinema DSP produces a virtual surround sound field, and SILENT Cinema is intended for listening through headphones.

This model does not support Dolby Atmos, Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization, DTS:X, Dolby Surround, Auro-3D, Surround:AI, Virtual Surround Back Speaker or Dialogue Lift.

Music and file playback

Pure Direct is intended for direct music playback, while Compressed Music Enhancer is designed for compressed recordings. There is no separate High-resolution Music Enhancer. The receiver can play MP3, WMA, MPEG-4 AAC, ALAC, FLAC, WAV, AIFF and DSD files.

The supported resolution depends on the format. MP3, WMA and MPEG-4 AAC playback is supported up to 48 kHz/16-bit, while ALAC reaches up to 96 kHz/24-bit. FLAC supports up to 192 kHz/24-bit, WAV and AIFF up to 192 kHz/32-bit, and DSD up to 11.2 MHz.

TV, video sources and gaming

The HDMI output supports eARC, ARC and HDMI CEC. The HDMI path is compatible with 4K/60 video pass-through, HDCP 2.3, Dolby Vision, HLG and BT.2020. Lower-resolution video can also be upscaled to 4K.

Support for 4K/120AB, 8K/60B, HDR10+, VRR, ALLM, QMS and QFT was planned through a future firmware update. These features should therefore not be treated as unconditional capabilities without considering the firmware version installed on the receiver. HDMI video format conversion and manual video adjustment are not supported.

Source and speaker connections

One optical and one coaxial input accept digital audio, while three analogue inputs are available for line-level signals. There is no built-in phono input, so a turntable may require a separate phono preamplifier.

The front panel provides USB and headphone connections. A network port is available for a wired network connection, while Bluetooth supports the SBC and AAC codecs. Spotify Connect is also supported. There are no additional line-level PRE OUT connections, digital audio outputs, XLR sockets, or component and composite video connections.

Calibration and everyday operation

YPAO room acoustic calibration adjusts the system for the listening position, although multipoint measurement is not supported. YPAO Volume corrects the frequency balance when listening at lower levels, while Adaptive DRC manages the dynamic range.

The initial and maximum volume levels can be configured, and audio delay can be adjusted from 0 to 500 ms. Four SCENE memories store frequently used settings. App control is provided for iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets. Voice control is listed as available, but no specific voice platform is identified. Browser-based control is not supported.

MusicCast and system expansion

MusicCast is an app-controlled multi-room audio system. Availability of streaming services may depend on the country, account, software and service provider.

Optional compatible MusicCast wireless surround speakers can be used for the rear channels of a 5.1-channel system. These speakers are not included. Bi-amp capability allows the frequency sections of a compatible front speaker to be powered separately.

The RX-V4A is intended for one main listening zone. Zone 2, Zone 3, Zone 4, Powered Zone, Zone B and zone video outputs are not supported. Party Mode is also unavailable. The receiver has no RS-232C connection, 12 V trigger, or remote IR input and output.

Positioning in an equipment cabinet

The enclosure measures 43.5 × 17.145 × 38 cm. With the antenna raised, its dimensions are 43.5 × 25 × 38 cm. This 8.8 kg receiver needs a stable, ventilated shelf with sufficient room for the antenna and connected cables.
