Yamaha RX-A6A AV Receiver

Yamaha RX-A6A AV receiver is designed for multichannel home cinema and music systems. It features a 9.2-channel amplifier section and processes signals for up to 11.2 channels. Seven HDMI inputs bring a television, media players and gaming devices together in one system.

This AVENTAGE model uses a Qualcomm QCS407 processor and two ESS digital-to-analogue converters. Two-channel XLR connections accommodate an analogue source, while 11.2-channel pre-outs allow external power amplifiers to be added.

Surround sound processing

SURROUND:AI adjusts the surround effect in real time to suit the scene being played. CINEMA DSP HD3 provides 24 DSP programmes. Dialogue Level Adjustment and Dialogue Lift help match vocal height and clarity to the screen position.

Supported formats include Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Surround, DTS:X and DTS-HD Master Audio. Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer, Virtual Presence Speaker and Virtual Surround Back Speaker can create virtual channels. SILENT CINEMA provides surround listening through headphones.

Auro-3D requires a firmware update. This should be considered when planning a particular surround-speaker layout.

Video and HDMI capabilities

The receiver has seven HDMI inputs and three outputs. eARC carries high-resolution audio from a compatible television. ARC and HDMI CEC simplify television audio and linked-device control.

Dolby Vision and conversion from analogue video to HDMI are supported. Upscaling to 8K requires a firmware update. 8K60AB and 4K120AB pass-through were planned for a future firmware update.

HDR10+, VRR, ALLM, QMS and QFT also depend on a firmware update. Check the firmware version installed on the individual unit before planning to use these features.

Audio sources and network connections

The home network can be accessed through Ethernet or 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and MusicCast support music streaming and multi-room systems. MusicCast Surround brings the same ecosystem into a surround setup.

Bluetooth supports SBC and AAC codecs. A USB input is located on the front panel. The receiver also provides three optical, two coaxial and six analogue audio inputs.

A dedicated phono input accommodates an analogue vinyl system. Component and composite video inputs are useful for legacy sources. The headphone output enables private listening.

Network playback supports MP3, WMA, MPEG-4 AAC, ALAC, FLAC, WAV, AIFF and DSD files. Permitted resolution varies by format and is listed in the specification table.

Calibration and control

YPAO-R.S.C. performs multipoint measurements and analyses reflections and speaker angles. 3D measurement and 64-bit precision EQ calculation help tailor the system to the room.

During calibration, distribute microphone positions around the main listening area. After automatic measurement, dialogue level, bass balance and channel delay can be assessed.

YPAO Volume adjusts tonal balance at lower listening levels. Adaptive DRC manages dynamic range, while initial and maximum volume settings help prevent unexpected jumps in level. Audio delay is adjustable from 0 to 500 ms.

Pure Direct provides a shorter signal path. Compressed Music Enhancer is intended for compressed recordings, while High-resolution Music Enhancer is designed for high-resolution material. Bi-amping allows the frequency sections of a compatible speaker to be powered separately.

Multi-zone system

Zones 2 and 3 can use the receiver’s built-in amplifier channels. Pre-outs are also provided for both zones, with HDMI available for Zone 2. Zone 4 is carried over HDMI.

Zone B has an HDMI output, and zone menus can be displayed on screen. Party Mode distributes selected content to multiple zones simultaneously.

Placement

The enclosure measures 435 mm wide, 192 mm high and 442 mm deep. Height increases to 271 mm with the antenna raised. The cabinet must leave additional room for the rear connections and antenna.

Its 20.3 kg weight requires a stable base. When planning shelf space, allow for both the enclosure depth and the bending clearance needed by connected HDMI, speaker and power cables.
