SME Audio Model 30/12 is a suspended, belt-driven precision turntable for systems using a 9, 10 or 12-inch tonearm. Tonearm selection and replacement
The Model 30/12 was developed as a larger version of the Model 30/2. Its reversible tonearm mounting board also enables the installation of a 9-inch tonearm. If several tonearms are used, the board can be exchanged. Location pins help return it to a repeatable position.
The interface between the subchassis and tonearm mounting board is damped under tension. This is important when changing the board and preserving the intended mechanical coupling. Special chrome or gold finishes are not included as standard and must be arranged separately.
Choosing the signal chain
The turntable provides a platform for the tonearm and phono cartridge of your choice. The signal cable and phono stage should therefore be selected according to the connections and electrical requirements of those components. The Series V-12 is the tonearm most closely associated with this model. A reflex record clamp is included.
Suspension and adjustable damping
The subchassis is supported by 60 specially moulded O-rings, forming 120 rubber strands. The O-ring mounting system allows the rings to be removed and replaced. A thicker subchassis and main chassis provide the rigidity required by the larger structure.
Four fluid-damped elements control subchassis movement, with one separate damper installed in each support column. Adjusters allow the recommended values to be set using a gauge. Damping can also be tailored to the conditions at the final installation location.
Platter and record clamping
The heavy platter has a fine spiral texture machined into its surface. The reflex clamp is designed to increase contact between the record and platter.
Motor and speed adjustment
The three-phase brushless outrunner motor uses eight-pole neodymium magnets and three integrated Hall-effect sensors. The motor is isolated by adjustable urethane mounts. Their position permits precise alignment of the drive belt.
The electronic speed controller uses a microprocessor optimised for motor control. A proportional-integral algorithm operates within the closed-loop control system. Three record-playing speeds can be selected, while fine adjustment is available in either direction in increments of 0.01 percent.
Positioning and initial setup
With a net weight of 53.5 kg, the turntable requires a rigid, level support. The support must be capable of carrying the turntable together with every additional system component placed on it. Allow enough space to operate the tonearm and exchange the mounting board.
The voltage version appropriate for the local mains supply must be selected before ordering. Three voltage ranges are available, each operating at 50 or 60 Hz. An incorrect voltage version cannot be compensated for through the speed-controller settings.
