Klipsch R-40SA Height Channel Speaker

The Klipsch R-40SA speaker is designed for Dolby Atmos height effects and surround channels in a home cinema system. When used as an elevation speaker, it reproduces effects that appear to come from above the listening position. The model can be paired with either a bookshelf speaker or a floorstanding speaker. It can also operate as a dedicated surround speaker.

Role in a home cinema system

When placing the R-40SA on top of a bookshelf or floorstanding speaker, assign it to the appropriate height channel. If you install it beside or behind the listening position, select the corresponding surround channel instead.

Acoustic design

The 90° × 90° Tractrix horn extends from one edge of the cabinet to the other. The updated horn has larger external dimensions and surrounds the 1-inch LTS tweeter.

The tweeter uses an aluminium diaphragm with a Kapton suspension. Lower frequencies are handled by a 4-inch TCP driver. Its copper-coloured, thermoformed crystalline polymer cone is shaped with steeper angles.

Cabinet and placement

The MDF cabinet has a scratch-resistant, textured wood-grain finish. Concealed fasteners reduce the number of visible construction details, while the low-profile magnetic grille maintains a clean, uninterrupted appearance across the front.

For height-channel use, place the speaker on a stable surface on top of a suitable bookshelf or floorstanding speaker. Make sure that the horn is not obstructed by other objects, and leave enough room at the rear to route the speaker cable correctly.

The R-40SA will not fit every speaker. The supporting surface must be stable and appropriately sized, so check the available space before deciding on its final position.

Connection and system setup

The rear cable-management system is designed to help conceal the speaker wire behind the cabinet. Route the cable before placing the speaker in its final position. This avoids having to move the speaker after the system’s channels have already been calibrated.

In the AV receiver menu, choose the channel that matches the speaker’s actual physical role. Select a height-channel setting when the R-40SA is being used to create effects perceived above the listener. Choose the relevant surround setting when it is installed as a side or rear speaker.

Once the correct channel has been assigned, run the receiver’s calibration process. Alternatively, adjust the channel levels and speaker distances manually. The selected receiver setting should always correspond to the way the speaker has been positioned and used in the room.
