Onkyo TX-8220 stereo receiver is designed for a music, TV and other audio-source system. It combines 2.1-channel amplification, Bluetooth, digital inputs and an MM phono input. With both channels driven, the WRAT amplifier delivers 45 W per channel into 8 ohms. A powered subwoofer can be connected to the dedicated RCA output.
Wired and wireless connections
Bluetooth 4.1 lets you play music wirelessly from a compatible phone, tablet or computer. Auto Connect simplifies reconnection to a previously paired device, avoiding the need for a separate audio cable during everyday listening.
An optical TOSLINK input and a coaxial digital input are provided for a TV or BD/DVD player. Choose the connection available on your source. Four stereo RCA line inputs accommodate a CD player and other analogue components.
The MM phono input accepts a turntable with an MM cartridge directly. The adjacent grounding terminal is intended for the turntable’s ground wire. A turntable with an integrated phono preamplifier should instead be connected to a line-level RCA input.
A stereo RCA line output sends the signal to a compatible line-level device. The front-mounted 6.35 mm headphone output allows suitable headphones to be connected without an adapter.
Speaker and subwoofer connections
Binding posts are provided for 4-16-ohm passive speakers. A/B selection allows you to use speaker pair A, pair B or both pairs. These are not two independently controlled audio zones.
The RCA subwoofer output is intended for a powered subwoofer. Set its volume and crossover frequency on the subwoofer itself. Begin at a moderate volume, then balance it with the main speakers from your normal listening position.
Sound adjustment and initial setup
Start with the bass and treble controls in their neutral positions and keep the balance control centred. Make adjustments later only after considering speaker placement, room acoustics and the listening position.
In Direct mode, the frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 100 kHz within +1/-3 dB. This mode is useful when you want to avoid tone adjustments. Standard operation leaves the bass and treble controls available.
Understanding the power ratings
The 45 W-per-channel figure is measured with both channels operating across the full 20 Hz-20 kHz range, using an 8-ohm load at 0.08% THD.
The 100 W rating uses different conditions: a 6-ohm load, a 1 kHz test frequency and 0.1% THD. It therefore cannot be compared directly with the full-frequency-range rating. Dynamic-power figures indicate the amplifier’s short-term reserve with different loads.
Placement
The 435 mm-wide chassis requires a stable shelf or equipment cabinet. Allow room for its 328 mm depth, rear connections and cable bends. Do not cover the ventilation openings on top. Choose a firm, level support suitable for its 6.8 kg weight.

What is this receiver designed for?
It is intended for a system with two passive speakers and an optional powered subwoofer. It is not a multichannel surround-sound receiver, and Auro-3D is not supported.
