Hegel Viking CD Player

Hegel Viking CD player is a dedicated source for listeners with standard compact discs. It operates at the native 16-bit/44.1 kHz resolution of the format. The signal read from the disc is neither upsampled nor otherwise altered.

This model is designed for a stereo system that does not require a universal disc player or network player. Its integrated digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) allows the analogue outputs to be used immediately.

Disc reading and signal control

The player accepts 12 cm Red Book CDs. Compatibility with SACD, DVD, MP3 and data discs is not specified. This model is therefore intended primarily for an existing collection of standard music CDs.

The slot-loading CD mechanism uses a dedicated CD laser and drive. Discs are inserted directly through the opening in the front panel, so there is no extending disc tray.

Both the CD mechanism and the converter are controlled directly by Hegel’s master clock generator. It uses a low-phase-noise quartz crystal together with a discrete clock circuit developed by Hegel. The patented SoundEngine technology is incorporated into its operation.

The OLED display was selected for its low-noise operation and presents playback information.

Analogue audio circuitry

The analogue output stage was developed specifically for this model. It uses an analogue low-pass filter and Line Driver technology. When an XLR connection is used, the signal path remains fully balanced through to the amplifier connection.

Connections and how to choose them

One pair of fixed-level XLR outputs is provided for an amplifier or preamplifier with balanced inputs. This connection makes it possible to use the player’s fully balanced signal path.

One pair of fixed-level RCA outputs is suitable for a conventional unbalanced analogue input. With either connection, volume must be adjusted on the connected amplifier or preamplifier.

The 75-ohm BNC digital output can send the signal to a compatible external DAC or another digital device. Use a genuine 75-ohm BNC digital cable for this connection.

Operation and initial setup

Before starting a disc, select the connected analogue input on the amplifier and turn down the volume. The player has fixed-level outputs, so it does not control the system volume itself.

An automatic standby function reduces the need to switch off the player manually when it is not being used.

Placement and enclosure design

The 43 cm-wide enclosure follows the design of the Hegel P30A and H30A components. Its black finish helps these components maintain a consistent appearance when installed together.

Place the 7.3 kg player on a stable, level shelf. Leave enough room at the front to insert a disc and sufficient space behind it for the XLR, RCA or BNC cables. The stated 30.5 cm enclosure depth does not include the additional clearance required for connected and bent cables.

Can the player be connected directly to a power amplifier?

Only if the system includes separate volume control. The fixed-level outputs do not provide volume adjustment themselves.

When should I choose XLR, and when should I use RCA?

Choose XLR for an amplifier with a balanced input. RCA is intended for a conventional unbalanced input. Only one of these output pairs is needed for a single analogue connection.

Is an external digital-to-analogue converter required?

No. A converter is already integrated. An external DAC can be used through the BNC output if it has a compatible 75-ohm BNC digital input.

How much shelf space should I allow?

Account for the player’s 43 cm width, 30.5 cm depth and 7.3 kg weight. Leave clear space for the front loading slot and the rear connections.
