DIANA KRALL – ALL FOR YOU

All for You is a tribute album to the Nat King Cole Trio and was released in 1996, before Diana Krall became a superstar on the jazz scene. Despite later commercially much more successful albums, it is All for You that has received the most rave reviews to this day. The very personal piano interpretations on a Hamburg Steinway with discreet band accompaniment and an almost uncanny presence of voice testify to Krall’s deep fascination with Nat King Cole’s work as a pianist.

Before recording in New York in October 1995, Diana Krall had been touring for months with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Paul Keller. She was convinced that one could only capture the fascination of the work of the Nat King Cole Trio if a real band was playing and not studio musicians thrown together. Only rarely in jazz is it possible to prepare a song precisely and yet accessible without drums. Here is a lesson on the subject. Only in the piece Boulevard of Broken Dreams does the drums take over its part.

The ORG pressing is pressed with a lot of air on four 45 LP sides. Bernie Grundman is responsible for the mastering and everything is packed in an extra thick gatefold sleeve. And just so that all critics of Diana Krall’s abilities feel confirmed: yes, she has long legs and is pretty on this record too. Still, she can play the piano damn well and has a voice that could be described as a cross between honey and scotch.
