Pioneer MVH-AV290BT Car Multimedia Receiver

The Pioneer MVH-AV290BT multimedia receiver is a 2-DIN in-car entertainment centre designed for everyday journeys. It brings together music playback, hands-free calling and video playback from USB storage. Its main attractions are the 6.2-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity and a dedicated reversing-camera input.

Controls and media playback

The WVGA Clear Type touchscreen has a 16:9 aspect ratio and selectable widescreen modes. Red button illumination makes the physical controls easier to distinguish in a dark cabin.

The rear USB connection supports MP3, WMA, WAV and AAC audio files. It can also play DivX, Xvid, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video files, while JPEG and BMP photographs can be viewed on the screen.

Bluetooth audio streaming lets you listen to audio from a paired device. The HFP, A2DP and SPP profiles support calling, audio transmission and compatible data functions. The supplied external microphone is used for hands-free conversations.

Connections and installation

The receiver fits a 2-DIN dashboard opening and has an ISO connector. Its USB, AUX and video-output connections are positioned at the rear, so the required cables should be routed before the unit is secured in the dashboard.

The rear AUX input can be used with an analogue source. RCA and mini-jack AV connections are provided for video sources. A separate rear video output can send the picture to another compatible display.

The reversing-camera input and camera-mode switching simplify the integration of an additional parking system. A camera is not included. The Pioneer ND-BC8 reversing camera is offered separately as an accessory for this model.

The wired remote-control input is intended for a compatible controller. Supporting a vehicle’s multifunction display may require additional vehicle-specific equipment.

Audio-system adjustment

The five-band graphic equaliser allows individual areas of the audio spectrum to be adjusted. Source level adjustment helps balance the volume when switching between the radio, USB and other sources.

Two pairs of RCA pre-outs can be configured for front and rear channels or for a subwoofer. Choose the appropriate mode to suit the planned external-amplifier system.

The high-pass filter limits the low frequencies sent to the main channels. This is useful when tuning a system that includes a separate subwoofer. Begin with a moderate setting, then make further adjustments while listening from the driver’s seat.

The MOSFET amplifier is rated at 50 W × 4 maximum power. This is not an RMS power rating, so the figures should not be compared directly.

Radio and compatibility with older Apple devices

The RDS FM/AM tuner can store 24 radio stations. Direct iPod and iPhone control was designed for Apple devices of the corresponding generation. It does not guarantee compatibility with current connectors or software.

The iPod cable is sold separately. Before choosing this connection, check the connector type used by the intended Apple device.
