The Audio-Technica VM610MONO cartridge is a VM-type mono phono cartridge designed for playing mono vinyl records. It features a standard 1/2-inch mount and a bonded conical stylus. Its output signal requires a phono preamplifier input with the appropriate load.

What this cartridge is designed for

This model is intended for turntables used to play monophonic records. It can be installed on a compatible tonearm or removable headshell that accepts a standard two-screw 1/2-inch mount. It is not suitable for turntables with integrated cartridges or a different mounting format.

The 20-20,000 Hz frequency response covers the usual audible frequency range. However, the cartridge is defined primarily by its monophonic design. Stylus and cantilever construction

The 0.6 mil conical stylus has a bonded tip and a round shank. Unlike line-contact profiles, a conical stylus does not need to be oriented according to the direction of a contact edge. Correct overhang and cartridge offset angle must still be set during installation.

The stylus cantilever is made from an aluminium pipe. It transfers the stylus movements to the cartridge’s transducer. The bonded construction and round shank are also relevant when choosing a replacement part. The specified replacement stylus for this model is the VMN10CB.

Installing the cartridge

The cartridge measures 17.3 × 17.0 × 28.2 mm. Before installation, check that there will be sufficient clearance beneath the headshell. The cartridge body must not touch the record when the stylus is lowered into the groove.

Two lengths of mounting screw are supplied. Choose a length that passes through the headshell and reaches the nut securely. A screw that is too long must not press against the cartridge body.

The 6.4 g weight must be considered when balancing the tonearm. The counterweight needs to balance the cartridge together with the headshell and mounting hardware being used. Complete the geometric alignment before setting the final tracking force.

Setting the tracking force

The recommended starting setting is 2.0 g, which is within the permitted range of 1.8-2.2 g. It is best to verify the tracking force with a turntable stylus gauge, as the scale on the tonearm may be less accurate.

Insufficient force may prevent the stylus from tracking the groove steadily. Excessive force would exceed the intended adjustment range. If the turntable has anti-skating adjustment, begin with a setting corresponding to the selected tracking force.

The 23° vertical tracking angle is a cartridge geometry specification. If the tonearm height is adjustable, change it only after completing the cartridge’s basic alignment. Set the overhang, offset angle and tracking force first.

Choosing a phono preamplifier

The 3.0 mV output voltage is specified at 1 kHz and 5 cm/s. This is not a line-level signal. The cartridge must be connected to a phono preamplifier rather than directly to a conventional line-level input.

The recommended load resistance is 47,000 ohms, with a load capacitance of 100-200 pF. Total capacitance includes both the phono input and the turntable cable. When using an adjustable phono preamplifier, both parts of the signal path must therefore be taken into account.

The 1,400-ohm coil impedance is measured at 1 kHz. It should not be confused with the recommended phono input load. These are two separate parameters describing the cartridge itself and the conditions under which it should be connected.

Tonearm compatibility

Static compliance is 35 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne. Dynamic compliance is 8 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne, measured at 100 Hz. When comparing cartridges, it is important to retain the stated measurement-frequency condition.

The dynamic compliance value helps when assessing the mechanical match between a cartridge and tonearm. It cannot be compared directly with a value measured at a different frequency. Tonearm effective mass is not part of this cartridge’s specifications.

Using the cartridge in an audio system

In a system built around a stereo amplifier or AV receiver, this cartridge serves as the turntable’s signal source. The system must provide a suitable phono input. Otherwise, a separate phono preamplifier must be placed between the turntable and a line-level input.

The cartridge must not be connected directly to a power amplifier or loudspeakers. Only one cartridge is installed in a single tonearm headshell. If you want to alternate between this mono cartridge and another cartridge, a removable headshell is a practical option where supported by the tonearm.
