Focal PC 165 speakers are a 6.5-inch (16.5 cm) coaxial speaker kit designed for use in a car. The kit belongs to the Focal Performance series. Each speaker combines a woofer with an adjustable tweeter, while the integrated crossover distributes the audio signal between the two drivers.

Design and intended use

In this coaxial design, the tweeter is mounted together with the 6.5-inch woofer. This arrangement is intended for vehicle locations designed to accommodate a single, combined speaker assembly. There is no need to plan a separate mounting position for the tweeter.

The woofer uses a Polyglass cone. The woofer and centrally mounted tweeter form a single speaker assembly, providing both low- and high-frequency reproduction from the same installation point.

Partial horn loading is used in the tweeter design. The adjustable element allows its direction to be changed after the main speaker has been installed. This is useful when the vehicle’s factory mounting position points toward the footwell, the door trim, or away from the listener.

Installation and connection

The kit is designed for 6.5-inch (16.5 cm) mounting positions. Before installation, compare the opening diameter, mounting points, and available installation depth with the speaker. You should also check the clearance behind the door trim and around moving parts of the window mechanism.

The speaker signal connects to the speaker output of the vehicle’s audio system. The integrated crossover separates the portions of the signal intended for the woofer and tweeter. A separate crossover is therefore not required solely to divide frequencies between the drivers in these coaxial speakers.

Both channels must be connected with matching polarity. Reversed polarity on one channel can weaken the central stereo image and reduce bass reproduction. Secure the cables so that they cannot be pinched by trim panels or come into contact with moving vehicle components.

Adjusting the tweeter direction

Begin by aiming both tweeters in the same direction. Sit in your normal listening position and compare several angles. Pay attention to vocal clarity, the balance of the high frequencies, and the position of the apparent sound centre.

Make small adjustments without changing the equaliser settings. This makes it easier to hear the effect of direction alone. Once you find a suitable position, check the result from the passenger seat and choose a balance that works acceptably for both front seating positions.
