The Acoustic Energy AE109 speaker is a passive 2.5-way floorstanding model designed for listening to music in a room with a separate amplifier. Its cabinet is 800 mm high and only 160 mm wide, so it occupies relatively little floor space. The three-driver configuration combines two paper-cone mid/bass drivers with a soft-dome tweeter.

Compact floorstanding cabinet

The cabinet is made from 18 mm MDF panels. Its slim proportions suit rooms where a floorstanding speaker is preferred but there is not enough space for a wide enclosure. The design takes its styling cues from the Acoustic Energy Reference series.

Finish options include satin black and walnut-effect vinyl veneer. The slim, fabric-covered grille is held in place magnetically. When it is removed, no visible fixing holes remain on the front baffle.

Drivers and frequency distribution

Two nominal 4-inch, approximately 102 mm, paper-cone drivers reproduce the midrange and bass frequencies. Their high-power magnet system is designed to control cone movement. High frequencies are handled by a 28 mm textile and silk soft-dome tweeter.

The 2.5-way crossover distributes frequencies between the three drivers. Its topology is designed to coordinate their operation and improve power handling, while phase and time alignment are also taken into account. The specified crossover frequency is 2.3 kHz.

Connecting the speaker to a system

This is a passive speaker, so it requires a separate stereo or AV amplifier. It connects to the amplifier’s speaker outputs using speaker cable. The design does not provide direct line-level, wireless or phone connectivity.

The nominal 4-ohm impedance is the main consideration when choosing an amplifier. The amplifier must be designed to operate reliably with a 4-ohm load. The stated 89 dB sensitivity is measured at 2.83 V from a distance of one metre.
