What size and power system do you need?

The required system size and power depend on the size of your room, its furnishings, and the purpose of the system. A good system must be powerful enough and intelligently positioned to fill the space with high-quality, clear sound and picture.

There is no point buying a complex and expensive system for a small room — you will never use its full power. Conversely, a television that is too small or an audio system that is too weak for a large space will produce disappointing results. Online reviews do not account for your budget, space, and individual needs.

2.0, 2.1, 5.1, or 7.1?

Speaker systems are available in 2.0, 2.1, 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 configurations: the first number is the number of speakers, while 0 or 1 indicates whether a subwoofer is included.

Before buying, consider what you will use the system for: films, gaming, or music? 5.1 or 7.1 is ideal for games and films; if music is the priority, choose 2.1 or 5.1. A 5.1 system is the best all-round choice — suitable for every activity.

How to position a 5.1 audio system correctly

Center speaker — place it as close to the screen as possible so it reproduces on-screen action accurately. The screen should be centered between the front speakers. If the front speakers are above the screen, place the center speaker below it; if they are lower, place it above the screen. Position the center speaker slightly behind the front speakers so the distance to the listener is equal.

Rear speakers — position them opposite each other on the side walls, at listener height and slightly behind the listener.

Subwoofer — place it beside the right or left front speaker. It is worth experimenting to find the best sound.

Additional tips: angle the speakers toward yourself; do not place them closer than 20 cm to a wall; there should be no furniture between you and the speakers, as it weakens the sound.

What is an AV receiver, and do you need one?

You cannot achieve excellent sound without an AV receiver — connect your TV, Blu-ray player, or game console to it, and it will deliver precise, high-quality sound to the speakers.

When choosing an AV receiver, make sure it is powerful enough for the entire system. Pay attention to the supported modes and connections.
